Fueled by Passion, Driven by Purpose

By Tina Smith LPC, MEd

What Drives You? Passion or Purpose?

Maybe both. Or maybe you’re feeling stuck.

Every morning, we wake up with a purpose. This purpose usually falls into the category of serving. Whether serving others or taking time to self-care, there’s an immediate and present need to show up for something each day.

But if you’re feeling unsure about your purpose, start by identifying your present. Then you can begin to uncover your path forward. I often say, “You don’t know where to go unless you first know where you are.”

Whether you’ve walked many paths or are just now trying to figure life out, there is something inside you waiting to be sparked. Anything that is driven must be ignited. Anything that moves must be fueled.

Start with Passion: It’s the Spark

Passion is a spark. It lights the fire within. That’s why I suggest you begin by exploring what you’re passionate about. If you feel stuck here, don’t worry. The next few steps will help you get unstuck and reignite that inner flame.

Step 1. Sit Still and Remember Joy

The first step is simple but powerful: pause.

Take a moment to reflect on the times in your life when you genuinely smiled. What were you doing? Who were you with? Maybe you were creating something, visiting a friend, or helping someone solve a problem.

That feeling? That’s joy. And that joy is your igniter.

When you identify what brings you joy, you’re getting closer to what fuels your purpose. For some, this spark alone can propel them into their calling.

Remember: your purpose isn’t limited. It’s only defined by the depth of your imagination and the courage to pursue it.

Step 2. Let the Desire Drive You

Now that you’ve identified your joy, ask yourself, “Do I want more of this feeling?”

That desire becomes your driver.

Your driver is what gets you up in the morning. It’s fueled by your purpose. And staying fueled each day means choosing thoughts and habits that support that drive. You can do this by:

  • Believing in yourself
  • Speak life through positive affirmations
  • Leaning on faith to move forward

These are your daily fuel sources: encouragement and empowerment working together.

Step 3. Reflect to Refuel at Night

As the day comes to an end, take a moment to reflect. What brought you joy, peace, or comfort today?

Most of us lay our heads down with thoughts of tomorrow swirling around. This can show up as anxiety… or excitement. But either way, it interrupts the restoration we need.

Here’s the key: evenings are for restoration.

To calm your mind, journal your fears and plans. Put them on paper. This simple act frees your thoughts and prepares your heart for rest.

Tomorrow Starts Tonight

Your plans for tomorrow, whether big or small, will continue to fuel your passion and drive your purpose.

So, take care of your spark. Let your joy guide you. And trust that what fuels you today is part of what God is shaping in you for tomorrow.
