The Rat Race: A Reminder to Stop and Smell the Roses

by Tina Smith, LPC MEd.

I wasn’t sure if I should title this “The Rat Race” or “Stop and Smell the Roses.” The confusion stems from watching the world’s constant and steady speed to accomplish something or to get somewhere quickly, yet the beauty of what the world holds is overlooked daily.

Experiencing beautiful things has a mental and physiological effect on our wellbeing. This amazing phenomenon can be achieved immediately when you decide to allow yourself to notice what is before you. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This means that you get to decide what is beautiful. However, if you’re too busy to do so, then you are missing opportunities to practice mental wellness. Allowing yourself to experience beauty will decrease stress while increasing a sense of happiness.

So, let’s focus on the roses (metaphorically speaking). To do so, you must find time to slow down and appreciate what’s before you. As you read this, you’ve already begun the process of slowing down. Now take a deep breath, release the tension, and focus on the now—the present. Find three things around you to appreciate. For example, I’m enjoying this dark roasted coffee, the fact that it is a sunny day for productivity, and all of you—my readers—who are trying your best to live a fulfilled life.

Now it’s your turn. As you practice this daily, you’ll need to be intentional in carving out time. Whether you are sitting in traffic, facing a long day at work, busy with kids, or just figuring life out—chances are, even in the busiest moment, there’s something nearby worth appreciating.

So, what will you choose to notice today? Then, pause again tomorrow—and see what else you discover.
